Interaction Design

Interaction design (IxD) is the practice of shaping how users behave with digital products and services over time. It is most useful when designing anything with a user interface—apps, websites, kiosks, or connected devices—and you need to decide what actions users can take, how the system responds, and whether the experience feels clear and reliable. The method works by mapping user goals to concrete interactions across five dimensions: the words and visuals users see, the physical context of use, the timing of feedback, and the overall behaviour of the system. Practitioners begin with user research to understand goals, create wireframes and interactive prototypes, and iterate through usability testing to refine controls, states, error handling, and feedback until the interaction meets user needs.
